The European Commission was seriously concerned about the law on national security in Hong Kong

The approval by the highest legislative body of the PRC of the bill on national security in Hong Kong greatly worried the European Commission. This was announced on June 30 by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at a press conference in Brussels. She noted that the EC is aware of the approval of the bill by the standing committee of the National People's Congress. In direct contact with the leadership of the PRC, EU representatives have repeatedly stated that the proposed law does not comply with Hong Kong's basic legislation and China's international obligations, the EC chairman added. We are very concerned about this issue, von der Leyen emphasized. She also recalled that the EU warned China about possible negative consequences that threaten the business and reputation of China because of this law. The European Commission is in close contact with international partners on this issue, she said. According to the news agency, on June 30, the law on national security of Hong Kong was unanimously adopted by the standing committee of the National People's Congress, and then approved by Chinese President Xi Jinping.
