In Abkhazia veterans addressed to deputies of Parliament
Veterans of the Patriotic War of Abkhazia demanded to convene an emergency meeting of the Abkhaz Parliament to adopt anti-corruption amendments to the legislation of the Republic. A statement released by Aiashar news agency was read out in a video message by one of the veterans, Vianor Ashba. We, war veterans, appeal to the Speaker of Parliament Valeria Quarchia and the entire parliamentary corps to convene an emergency session of the Parliament immediately on March 10 and to accept our demands for the adoption of amendments to the Law On Declaration of Property and Income by Officials and Deputies, As well as on the introduction into the Criminal Code of the article Illegal enrichment of officials and the entry into force of the Law from the date of its adoption, the statement reads. The statement states that veterans, in case of inaction of deputies, reserve the right to appeal to the people of Abkhazia. According to the news agency, on March 2, a group of three people began an indefinite strike in Sukhum, demanding a number of amendments to the recently adopted anti-corruption bill by Parliament. According to activists, in the current state the new law will not work effectively. As of 9 March, the number of hungry people had increased to six. Protesters also collected more than seven thousand signatures of support for their initiative.
